The Recessive gene Curly Horse is any horse other than a dominant gene North American Curly Horse, that is born curly, and is resulting from two straight haired, non-curly bloodline, non-curly coated, parents. They are rare. We are referring to this particular curly coat condition as being recessive gene Curly Horses, until we have more research to direct us to a better understanding of what it is, genetically. The recessive gene Curly Horse is another breed of horse, that "crops out" curly, for some undetermined reason. These recessive curlies, are definitely curly horses, with curly winter coats, and curly hair in their ears. They have occurred in the Quarter Horse, the Spanish Mustang, the Percheron draft horse, the Arabian, the Appaloosa, the Missouri Fox Trotter, the Tennessee Walking Horse, the American Paint Horse, the Morgan, the Miniature Horse, and probably others.

Note: ICHO/NACHR will register horses that are R/D breeding, but does not recommend the practice of mating recessive and dominant gene horses together until a test is developed to differentiate between the 2 genes.
